After hearing from a lot of friends over the past week, I’ve heard from person after person that they want to learn more about racism and police brutality but there are so many resources being thrown out there that it’s overwhelming to know where to start. I personally get it.. there’s A LOT of different things out there and IT IS a bit overwhelming. As I have looked through a lot of lists being put out there, I’ve been slightly saddened that I haven’t seen the documentary True Justice on any of them. I felt that this documentary did a great job of communicating things about our criminal justice system that need to change. Not only that, but there are also beautiful stories of freedom, redemption, and purpose. If you want to check it out, you can watch it on Hulu with HBO or on the Equal Justice Initiative’s website.

This documentary made me happy, angry, and disgusted, yet made me feel hopeful because there are people out there doing amazing things! I would encourage you to check it out. It’s super important to not just watch the documentary but to actually digest the information that it’s sharing, so if you do watch it, you may want to ask yourself the following questions:

  • What am I feeling?

  • Are there any topics I’d like to research further?

  • What ideas in this documentary challenged me?

I hope you enjoy/hate watching this as much as I did! I would love to follow along on your journey, so if you post any pics, be sure to use the hashtag, #teachlistenlove!

[SPOILER ALERT: For those of you reading our book of the month, Just Mercy, you may want to finish that before watching this documentary, since there are a few stories that overlap!]
